A Forgotten Heritage Brought to Life

“I felt goosebumps all over my body,” Hani recalls as she shares her experience entering the Great Mosque of Cordoba in Spain. Completely awestruck by its architectural design, ‘amazed’ isn’t enough of a word to describe her feelings during that moment when she stepped into the prayer hall erected by columns and double tiered arches that supported the building. Bedazzled and humbled to the point her eyes welled up in tears, Hani experienced the strong urge to quickly prostrate in this extraordinary masterpiece. Her love for Islamic architecture was even further affirmed as she witnessed the marvel of the mosque’s historical legacy.

As Hani explored the remains of a long-forgotten heritage once lost and often misunderstood, she tried to grasp the richness of its tradition and the trail of evidence left behind in the creation of beauty. Islamic architecture is akin to a gift that keeps on giving, the more she tries to unearth it, the more treasures she discovers. Islamic architecture has made significant contributions in calligraphy, arabesques, and geometric motifs. Its common architectural features are mosques, madrassas, tombs, palaces, hammams, fountains, and sabils; with the Quran serving as an inspiration and a guide for artists to create a representation of Paradise on earth.

It is this passion for Islamic architecture that influences Hani in her interior design work, a cultural labour of love that she wants to reveal to the whole world. In every interior design project that she is commissioned to do, she adds in features of Islamic art like Moroccan tiles, calligraphy, and Turkish rugs to embellish the whole façade. This has become Hani’s signature mark in her work as she assembles them piecemeal, intricately putting together a beautiful whole.

For any space that Hani designs, she envisions it to be adorned with tasteful touches that add finesse to the finished product. Candles, pendant lights, accessories like pillows and throws, flowers and even the selection of music are layered upon one another to complete the whole theatrics of a space. The home owner is made to feel as if she is whisked off to another world, dreamy and poetic, while finding solace in the cosiness that she calls home.

Being active in the industry for seven years has honed Hani’s interior design skills and as a testament to her talent, many of her new clients are referred to her from her previous work.
